Amanda Nguyễn becomes first Vietnamese woman to journey to space: a trailblazing triumph
Civil rights activist and scientist Amanda Nguyễn’s historic trip to space this week, she is the first Vietnamese woman to go to space on April 14, 2025. She was part of Blue Origin’s NS-31 mission, a historic all-female suborbital flight that pushes all-female missions and space exploration in general forward in terms of diversity and representation in the final frontier.
Amanda Nguyễn, who graduated from Harvard and founded the nonprofit organization Rise, was among the six-member crew that launched from Blue Origin’s facility in West Texas. The mission lasted about 11 minutes, crossing the Kármán line, the internationally accepted boundary of space and the point where astronauts can experience a few minutes of weightlessness and an incredible view of Earth.

In 2016, her activism as a social advocate resulted in the Sexual Assault Survivors’ Bill of Rights passing unanimously through the U.S. Congress. Through her organization Rise, she has worked to change laws throughout the United States and inspired campaigns worldwide on behalf of survivors’ rights.
In 2021, Amanda Nguyễn joined the International Institute of Astronautical Sciences as a scientist-astronaut candidate. Since then, her research has gone on to focus on bioastronautics, specifically women’s health conditions in space, making her spaceflight not merely a symbolic milestone, but rather a profoundly scientific endeavor.
