X (Twitter) Down Again: Global Outage Disrupts Users Amid Data Center Failure

On May 24, 2025, Elon Musk’s social media network X underwent a major worldwide outage, preventing thousands of people from using the app. Users complained of unsuccessful logins, non-loading timelines, and error messages of “Something went wrong. Try reloading.” The outage was reported at about 1:00 PM ET.

According to Downdetector, which maps online service disruptions, over 11,000 users reported issues within an hour of the outage. The outage was noticed among users in the United States, Europe, and Asia. Though some users had intermittent access, others could not use the platform.

The impact was significantly less in India, where Downdetector India recorded 266 customer complaints at its peak.

Official Response and Current Issues

X’s engineering team admitted the outage through a statement on the platform, saying:

We are experiencing a data center outage, and the team is actively working to remediate the issue.”

Though this was acknowledged, no particular timeline was given for the recovery of services. Platform users still report issues getting in; the corporation has not released any updates since. For X, this marks the third significant outage in recent times. The site went down significantly in March 2025, and Elon Musk attributed this to a “massive cyberattack.” No hard data was provided to support this claim.

WIRED also reported a fire in May at a data center rented by X in Hillsboro, Oregon, resulting in another outage. This episode raises questions about the platform’s infrastructure and resilience, even though it’s unclear whether it is connected to the current outage.

Users have resorted to other social media sites and forums to vent their frustration. Given the frequency of such outages, the reliability of X is questioned. Some users have jokingly proposed that the site has issues because Musk acquired it and laid off some staff, thus downsizing the engineering staff.

While X struggles with technical issues, users and stakeholders demand greater transparency and better infrastructure.
