Japan hits 10 million tourists faster than ever in 2025
Japan has reached an important milestone in its tourism industry. By March 2025, it had received more than 10 million overseas travelers, recording the fastest ever rate to attain this tally. The Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) states that in March alone, 3.5 million tourists visited, taking the first-quarter number to 10.54 million. This is above the last year’s milestone, which was achieved in April.
Key Drivers of the Tourism Surge
- Weak Yen: Depreciation of the Japanese yen has lowered the cost of travel and shopping in Japan for foreign tourists, contributing heavily to an increase in inbound tourism.
- Seasonal Attractions: The cherry blossom season in March brought in numerous tourists, with a record number of arrivals from nations such as the United States and Canada.
- Cruise Industry Revival: Japan’s cruise industry is growing strongly, with a considerable surge in foreign tourists and cruise visitors.
Japan’s Economic Impact
The tourist boom has also boosted Japan’s economy. In the first quarter of 2025, international visitors spent 2.27 trillion yen ($16 billion), a rise of 28.4% over last year. Total tourist expenditures in 2024 amounted to a record 8.1 trillion yen, up by 53% compared to the previous year. Infrastructure Challenges
The surge in tourist numbers has resulted in infrastructure issues. Japan’s airports suffer a severe jet fuel shortage, putting the country’s thriving tourism sector at risk. A record 17.8 million foreign visitors for the first half of the year from January to June has added to the issue, resulting in 140 more weekly flights being canceled. Narita Airport outside Tokyo is the worst hit.
Future Outlook
With the ongoing pace, tourist visits are poised to break the 2024 record of 36.87 million visitors. The Japanese government plans to receive 60 million visitors by 2030, riding on this wave to drive regional growth, particularly with the Osaka World Expo in 2025.
Japan’s quick recovery and development in the tourist industry are a testament to its international appeal and the effectiveness of its strategy to bring in foreign tourists.
