NBA: Cavaliers Dominate Heat With A Commandable 3-0 Series Lead
The Cleveland Cavaliers left no doubt about their dominance on Saturday night at the Kaseya Center in Miami, Florida. The 2016 NBA Champion crushed the Miami Heat easily with a 124-87 lead in Game 3 of their first-round Eastern Conference playoff series. Despite missing Darius Garland, the No. 1 seed team secured a decisive victory. With this win, the Cavs stand just one victory away from advancing to the Eastern Conference semifinals.
After aggravating a toe injury in Game 2, Darius Garland was a late scratch. His absence could have spelled trouble, especially against a desperate Heat team. Surprisingly, the Cavaliers showed no signs of weakness. Donovan Mitchell, who had carried Cleveland’s offense in Games 1 and 2, struggled with just 13 points on 4-of-14 shooting. Nevertheless, Cleveland’s depth shone as several players stepped up to deliver one of the franchise’s most dominant playoff performances.
Jarrett Allen led the Cavaliers with 22 points and 10 rebounds, controlling the paint on both ends. De’Andre Hunter, coming off the bench, added 21 points, 16 of them in the first half alone, providing the team with crucial momentum early. Starting in place of Garland, Ty Jerome played a key role with 13 points and 11 assists while recording an outstanding +33 plus-minus rating in just 22 minutes. His performance kept the offense running smoothly despite Garland’s absence.
Defensive Player of the Year Evan Mobley contributed 19 points, a blocked shot, and a steal. On the other hand, Max Strus chipped in with 18 points, connecting on four three-pointers to stretch Miami’s defense thinner. Jerome praised Hunter after the game, calling him “phenomenal on both ends of the ball and on the glass… That’s who he is. That’s why we got him. I’ve seen that for the last 10 years.”
Miami initially appeared ready to defend their home court, racing to a 15-6 lead in the first six minutes. However, the Cavaliers responded swiftly with an 18-0 run that silenced the crowd and seized the momentum for good. Even when the Heat trimmed the 20-point halftime deficit to 15 early in the third quarter, the Cavaliers refused to let up. This catch-up performance won’t happen because of Davion Mitchell’s layup and a three-pointer from Kel’el Ware. A quick 13-5 Cleveland run ended any hopes of a Miami comeback.
Bam Adebayo led the Heat with 22 points and 9 rebounds, but he received little support. Davion Mitchell added 16 points, yet no other Heat player scored more than Tyler Herro’s 13. Andrew Wiggins continued his postseason struggles, scoring just 10 points on 3-of-10 shooting. Coach Erik Spoelstra emphasized Wiggins’s importance after the game, saying, “He’s really important… He has to be assertive, has to be aggressive. I have to do a better job of getting him to spots where he can really produce for us.”
The 37-point defeat marked the worst playoff loss in Miami Heat history. This surpasses their 36-point loss in the 2013 NBA Finals. Ironically, the 2013 team rebounded to win the championship. Yet, this year’s squad faces the grim reality of a potential sweep. NBA teams leading 3-0 in a playoff series have a perfect 158-0 record in history. It is the statistic that does not bode well for the Heat.
For the Cavaliers, this 3-0 lead marks the 11th time in franchise history they have held such an advantage in a best-of-seven series. In all previous 10 instances, all during the LeBron James era, Cleveland completed the sweep. This group appears ready to add to that legacy. Cavaliers coach Kenny Atkinson credited the rebounding effort, stating, “Our guys knew that was the key, rebounding and winning the rebounding battle.” Evan Mobley summed up Cleveland’s mindset perfectly: “We took the first punch—and from there we just took the game over.“
Heat coach Erik Spoelstra called it “clearly, a very disappointing day” and acknowledged that Cleveland’s hunger far exceeded Miami’s. The Heat, who barely made it into the playoffs, now face elimination in Game 4 on Monday in Miami. Meanwhile, the Cavaliers will look to complete the sweep and continue their march through the Eastern Conference playoffs.
