NBA: Celtics Defeat Magic in Game 2 Despite Tatum’s Absence
The Boston Celtics secured a 109-100 victory over the Orlando Magic in Game 2 of their Eastern Conference first-round playoff series. The legendary NBA team made it despite the absence of six-time All-Star forward Jayson Tatum due to a right wrist injury. With this win, the Celtics now lead the series 2-0 as it shifts to Orlando for Game 3.
Tatum suffered a right distal radius bone bruise during Game 1 after a midair collision with Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Wendell Carter Jr. while attempting a two-handed dunk. Although he finished that game with 17 points and 14 rebounds, he was seen favoring his wrist afterward. Initially listed as doubtful for Game 2, Tatum was eventually ruled out. This unfortunate injury for the players marks his first playoff game he has missed in his career.
Jaylen Brown stepped up in Tatum’s absence, delivering an impressive performance with 36 points, 10 rebounds, and five assists. He shot 12-of-19 from the field and 5-of-7 from three-point range, effectively leading the Celtics’ offense.
Kristaps Porzingis also contributed significantly, scoring 20 points and securing 10 rebounds. He returned to the game after sustaining a cut to his forehead from an elbow by Goga Bitadze. His injury from the play requires him to seek medical attention and a bandage.
The Celtics’ starting lineup for Game 2 included Al Horford, who started instead of Tatum. He will join Brown, Jrue Holiday, Derrick White, and Porzingis. Derrick White and Payton Pritchard provided crucial support off the bench, combining 31 points.
The Orlando Magic maintained their starting lineup from Game 1, featuring Cory Joseph, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Franz Wagner, Paolo Banchero, and Wendell Carter Jr. Banchero led the Magic with 32 points, nine rebounds, and seven assists, while Wagner added 25 points.
The game was marked by physical play, continuing the intensity from Game 1. Al Horford expressed concerns about the Magic’s physicality, particularly regarding Caldwell-Pope’s foul on Tatum, stating, “Yeah, there was something extra… There was a lot. It was the second or third time that — especially [Caldwell-Pope] — went at him in that way.”
Head coach Joe Mazzulla commented on Tatum’s status before the game, saying, “I know he’s doing everything he can to put himself in position to play.” He added that Tatum would be evaluated day-to-day.
With the series now at 2-0 in favor of the Celtics, Game 3 is scheduled in Orlando. The team aims to maintain its momentum and secure another win on the road.
