NBA: Pacers Advanced to Round 2 After Stunning Game 5 Victory Over Bucks
In one of the most dramatic finishes in franchise history, the Indiana Pacers pulled off a stunning 119-118 overtime victory over the Milwaukee Bucks in Game 5 of the NBA Eastern Conference first round. With the win, Indiana clinched the series 4-1 and punched their ticket to the second round. Now that the team advances to Round 2, the Pacers anticipate facing the top-seeded Cleveland Cavaliers.
Things didn’t look good for Indiana early on. The Bucks jumped to a dominant 30-13 lead in the first quarter. Milwaukee’s top players, Giannis Antetokounmpo and AJ Green, helped the team start hot from beyond the arc. Indiana struggled with cold shooting and turnovers, and at one point trailed by 20. But as the second quarter wore on, the Pacers found their rhythm. Tyrese Haliburton and Myles Turner led the charge, cutting the deficit to six at halftime.
Indiana outscored Milwaukee in the second quarter 28-17 and continued to close the gap through the third. This spectacular performance from the Pacers eventually tied the game at 75-75 entering the fourth. The game stayed tight from there, with both teams trading leads and clutch baskets. The Bucks looked to be in control again late in regulation, but Haliburton tied the game at 103 with a dunk in the final seconds. This shot sends the Pacers vs Bucks Game 5 to overtime.
Overtime brought more intensity and drama to the Gainbridge Fieldhouse. Gary Trent Jr. hit several big threes for the Bucks, finishing with 33 points, and gave Milwaukee a seven-point lead with under a minute to go. But just when it seemed the Bucks would force a Game 6, the Pacers stormed back with an 8-0 run to steal the win.
Andrew Nembhard sparked the comeback with a clutch three-pointer to cut the lead to four. Moments later, he stole an inbound pass and found Haliburton, who was fouled on a layup and converted the three-point play. On the next Bucks possession, Trent Jr. fumbled a pass out of bounds, giving Indiana a final chance. With just 1.3 seconds left, Haliburton drove past Giannis and scored the go-ahead layup, igniting a wild celebration at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.
Haliburton finished the night with 26 points and nine assists. Turner added 21 points and nine rebounds, while Aaron Nesmith contributed 19 points and 12 boards. Giannis was dominant for Milwaukee, posting a triple-double with 30 points, 20 rebounds, and 13 assists. But in the end, it wasn’t enough.
After the game, Haliburton stood atop the scorer’s table, arms raised, urging the crowd to make noise in a scene reminiscent of Reggie Miller’s iconic playoff moments. He later admitted he was frustrated by missed shots late in regulation but credited his teammates for encouraging him to keep going. “They said we would get a chance to win at the end, and they would rely on me to do that,” Haliburton said. “I got a little down about it, but I stayed with it. I’m glad I delivered.”
Off the court, emotions ran high. A post-game confrontation broke out at midcourt when Haliburton’s father entered the floor and exchanged words with Antetokounmpo. He had just suffered his third straight first-round exit. The moment added tension to a heated rivalry between the two teams. Haliburton later addressed the incident, saying his father’s behavior was “unacceptable” and not something he supports.
With the win, the Pacers face the Cleveland Cavaliers in the Eastern Conference semifinals. Game 1 is set for Sunday in Cleveland. The Pacers won three of four regular-season games against the Cavaliers, though some of those wins came against a resting lineup.
The loss marks a disappointing end to a turbulent season for the Bucks. It is where their All-Star player, Damian Lillard, suffered a torn Achilles. Without him, Milwaukee’s playoff hopes rested largely on Giannis. While he performed admirably, the supporting cast couldn’t hold on when it mattered most.
Now, questions loom for the Bucks heading into the offseason. Antetokounmpo has one year left on his contract. Subsequently, after another early exit, speculation about his future is only likely to grow. “I wish I was still playing,” Giannis said postgame. “I wish I was still competing and going back out there.”
For now, though, the spotlight belongs to Indiana and Tyrese Haliburton, whose late-game brilliance has the Pacers believing they can make a deep playoff run.
