NBA: Minnesota Timberwolves Stun LA Lakers in Game 1 Blowout
The Minnesota Timberwolves shocked the Los Angeles Lakers with a 117-95 victory in Game 1 of their Western Conference series. This face-off between the known teams is part of the NBA first-round playoff series that happened just last night at Crypto.com Arena. The Timberwolves set a franchise playoff record by sinking 21 three-pointers, showcasing their offensive prowess and physical defense.
Despite high expectations for the Lakers, especially with the addition of Luka Dončić alongside LeBron James, the team struggled to find rhythm. Dončić led the Lakers with 37 points, including a half-court buzzer-beater at the end of the third quarter. Nevertheless, the Slovenian basketball player received little support from his teammates. LeBron James added 19 points, while Austin Reaves contributed 16, but Minnesota’s defense stifled the Lakers’ offense.
The Timberwolves’ Anthony Edwards played a crucial role, contributing 22 points, nine assists, and eight rebounds. Jaden McDaniels had a standout performance with 25 points on 11-of-13 shooting, including 3-of-3 from beyond the arc, and nine rebounds. Naz Reid provided a significant boost off the bench, scoring 23 points and hitting six three-pointers.
Minnesota’s defense was equally impressive, limiting the Lakers to 36% shooting from the field and 31.8% from three-point range. The Timberwolves also dominated in transition, outscoring the Lakers 25-6 on fast breaks.
Lakers coach J.J. Redick acknowledged the team’s lack of physical readiness, stating, “We were mentally ready… I’m not sure that physically we were ready, if that makes sense… And really, when they started playing with a lot of thrust and physicality, like we just didn’t respond immediately to that.”
The Lakers must make significant adjustments before Game 2, scheduled for Tuesday night in Los Angeles. Falling behind 0-2 in the series would put them in a precarious position as they head to Minnesota for the next two games.
