Labor Day 2025: Massive Job Fairs, Free Rides, and Wage Demands
As the Philippines marks Labor Day on May 1, 2025, the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) is spearheading initiatives to support workers nationwide. These include massive job fairs, free public transportation, and reinforced wage guidelines. Simultaneously, labor groups are organizing rallies to advocate for a ₱200 daily wage increase.
Nationwide Job Fairs Offer Over 216,000 Opportunities
DOLE is set to host job fairs across 69 locations nationwide, featuring more than 216,000 job vacancies. These include approximately 181,933 local positions and 34,211 overseas opportunities. The main event will be held at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City, with additional fairs in malls and public venues nationwide.
Labor Secretary Bienvenido Laguesma expressed optimism about surpassing last year’s job offerings, stating that the number of vacancies is expected to increase as Labor Day approaches. The job fairs aim to connect job seekers with potential employers, providing opportunities across various industries.
‘Libreng Sakay’ Program Provides Free Train Rides
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. announced the commencement of the “Libreng Sakay” program, giving a free ride on MRT-3, LRT-1, and LRT-2 from April 30 to May 3, to honor Labor Day. The initiative is a token of gratitude for the efforts of Filipino laborers toward the development of their nation.
The Department of Transportation (DOTr) confirmed that this annual gesture aims to ease the commuting burden for workers during the Labor Day celebrations. Commuters are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity to travel for free on the specified dates.
DOLE Issues Holiday Pay Guidelines
DOLE released Labor Advisory No. 04, Series of 2025, outlining the pay rules for the Labor Day regular holiday. Employees who do not work on May 1 are entitled to 100% of their daily wage, provided they were present or on leave with pay on the workday preceding the holiday.
For those who work on Labor Day, the following pay rules apply:
- 200% of the daily wage for the first eight hours of work.
- An additional 30% of the hourly rate for overtime work beyond eight hours.
- If the holiday falls on the employee’s rest day, an additional 30% of the 200% wage is granted.
- For overtime work on a holiday that also falls on the rest day, an extra 30% of the hourly rate on top of the rest day holiday premium is provided.
Employers are reminded to adhere to these guidelines to ensure fair compensation for their employees during the holiday.
Labor Groups Rally for ₱200 Wage Increase
Various labor organizations are set to stage rallies across the country on Labor Day, advocating for a ₱200 daily wage increase. Groups such as Partido Manggagawa (PM) and the National Wage Coalition are urging the government to certify the wage hike bill as urgent, citing the rising cost of living and the need for improved labor rights.
In Manila, workers will march from España to Mendiola, while similar demonstrations are planned in Cebu, Bacolod, Iloilo, and Iligan. The rallies seek to bring attention to workers’ plight and call for legislative intervention to correct wage imbalances and labor issues.
