NBA: Boston Celtics Secure Game 1 Victory Over Orlando Magic
As the first-round series of the 2025 NBA Playoffs progressed, the Boston Celtics kicked it off with a convincing 103-86 win over the Orlando Magic in Game 1. The game at TD Garden showcased Boston’s playoff readiness and depth. Yet, they achieved it without a brief scare involving their star forward, Jayson Tatum.
Tatum made Celtics fans panic with 8:28 left in the fourth quarter. While attacking the rim for a powerful dunk, he was met midair by Orlando defenders Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Wendell Carter Jr. Caldwell-Pope grabbed Tatum’s right elbow as he soared toward the basket, yanking him downward and causing an awkward fall onto his right wrist. Tatum grimaced in pain and immediately clutched his wrist as teammates and medical staff rushed to his side.
The foul was reviewed and ultimately upgraded to a Flagrant Foul 1 due to its severity and the risk of injury. Despite the hard fall, Tatum remained in the game. He missed both free throws following the foul but returned to drill a three-pointer minutes later. This hunger to win of the power forward clearly states that he’s eager to take home the championship. Even so, fans couldn’t help but notice him wincing and holding his wrist as he sat on the bench during the final two minutes of the game.
After the final buzzer, all eyes turned to the health of Boston’s leading scorer. Speaking to reporters postgame, Tatum tried to ease concerns. “It’s all right,” he said. “I just fell on it, landed on it.” The post-game X-rays revealed no structural damage, coming back clean and negative. “Yeah, it’s clean, it’s good,” he confirmed when asked about the results. While Tatum downplayed the severity, the Celtics will surely monitor the situation closely ahead of Game 2.
Tatum finished with 17 points and 14 rebounds on 8-of-22 shooting in nearly 40 minutes of play. Though not his most efficient night, he contributed in multiple ways, particularly on the glass and defensively. However, Derrick White lit up the scoreboard and stole the spotlight. White delivered a stellar performance, dropping 30 points and hitting seven three-pointers. This move from him provides a crucial offensive spark for Boston. Payton Pritchard also stepped up with 19 points off the bench. This helps the Celtics turn a narrow halftime deficit into a comfortable win with a dominant third quarter.
Another bright spot for Boston was Jaylen Brown, who returned to action despite recent knee issues. Brown revealed after the game that he had received injections to help manage the lingering discomfort. He looked solid in 30 minutes, posting 16 points on 6-of-14 shooting. “I’m feeling a lot better, moving a lot better,” Brown said via the Boston Herald. “Some people have definitely been praying for me over the last couple of weeks. I appreciate it.”
Conversely, the Orlando Magic struggled to find consistent offense beyond their two young stars. Paolo Banchero led all scorers with an impressive 36 points and 11 rebounds, showing he’s ready for the playoff spotlight. Franz Wagner also chipped in with 23 points, but the rest of the roster failed to contribute meaningfully. The Magic turned the ball over too often and allowed the Celtics to take control during a decisive 30-18 third quarter.
Boston’s defense was relentless, forcing Orlando into tough shots and capitalizing on turnovers to build separation. While Banchero and Wagner kept the Magic competitive for stretches, the lack of bench production and poor shot selection made it difficult for Orlando to keep pace with a deep and disciplined Celtics squad.
Game 2 of the Boston Celtics vs. Orlando Magic series is set for Wednesday night at TD Garden. With Tatum’s wrist injury now confirmed as minor and Brown looking spry, the Celtics will aim to take a 2-0 lead before heading to Orlando. For the Magic, adjustments are crucial. They’ll need to tighten their ball security, find scoring from the supporting cast, and slow down Boston’s perimeter shooting if they hope to even the series.
The Celtics handled business in Game 1, showcasing poise, physicality, and a strong team effort. The spotlight remains on Jayson Tatum’s health, but for now, Boston looks like a team ready to make another deep playoff run.
