PAGASA: ‘Danger level’ heat index in 19 areas on April 21

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has forecast a “danger level” heat index in 19 areas across the country on Monday. According to its 5 p.m. bulletin issued on April 20, the synoptic stations in Dagupan City, Pangasinan, and Aparri, Cagayan, are expected to record a 44°C heat index.

Meanwhile, a 43°C heat index is forecast in Tuguegarao City, Cagayan; ISU Echague, Isabela; Cubi Point, Subic Bay; Olongapo City; San Ildefonso, Bulacan; and Sangley Point, Cavite City.

PAGASA also reported that the following locations are likely to record a 42°C heat index: NAIA in Pasay City, Bacnotan in La Union, Casiguran in Aurora, Ambulong in Tanauan, Batangas; San Jose in Occidental Mindoro; Puerto Princesa City in Palawan; Daet in Camarines Norte; Masbate City; CBSUA-Pili in Camarines Sur; Dumangas in Iloilo; Catarman in Northern Samar; and Zamboanga City in Zamboanga del Sur.

PAGASA on Heat Index, OCD’s Response

The heat index measures what the temperature feels like to the human body by combining air temperature and humidity. PAGASA classifies heat index values from 42°C to 51°C under the “danger” category, warning of increased risks of heat-related illnesses, including heat stroke.

In response, the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) has activated emergency response protocols in several areas. This includes placing all OCD regional offices on alert and coordinating closely with local government units to ensure swift assistance and safeguard public health and safety amid the extreme heat conditions.
