Mount Kanlaon, located on Negros Island in the Philippines, has been exhibiting intensified volcanic activity in recent months, raising concerns among local communities and authorities.
April 2025 Eruption
On April 8, 2025, Kanlaon Volcano experienced a significant eruption, emitting a 4-kilometer-high ash plume that affected several farming villages southwest of the volcano. The eruption lasted over an hour, leading to ashfall in at least four towns and suspending classes in affected areas. Fortunately, no injuries or structural damages were reported.
Ongoing Alert Level and Risks
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) has maintained Alert Level 3 for Kanlaon, indicating high volcanic unrest. This alert level suggests that magma is at shallow depths beneath the volcano, and a hazardous eruption could occur within weeks or even days. Residents are advised to avoid the 6-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone due to the risks of explosions and potential pyroclastic flows.
Community Impact
The ongoing volcanic activity has significantly impacted local communities. In December 2024, a previous eruption led to the evacuation of approximately 87,000 residents, many of whom remain in emergency shelters. The April 2025 eruption has further strained resources, with continued displacement and disruptions to daily life.
