The Philippine passport has recently garnered international acclaim for its aesthetic appeal, earning a spot on Hypebeast’s list of the world’s most visually striking passports.

Why Is the Philippine Passport Considered Aesthetic?

Hypebeast highlighted the passport’s “iconic Philippine eagle” design on its cover, symbolizing the nation’s rich biodiversity and cultural heritage. The maroon-colored regular passport, issued to ordinary citizens, features this emblem prominently, reflecting national pride. Additionally, the passport’s interior pages are adorned with images of Philippine artifacts, cultural icons, historic sites, and even national anthem lyrics in Baybayin script, showcasing the country’s artistic and historical richness.

Other countries recognized for their passport designs include Norway, Canada, Hong Kong, Japan, Finland, New Zealand, Hungary, and Belgium.

Passport Strength and Travel Access

Despite its aesthetic accolades, the Philippine passport ranks 75th in the Henley Passport Index globally, allowing visa-free access to 67 destinations as of July 2024.  This marks a slight decline from its 73rd position in 2024.

The Philippines issues three types of passports:

  • Maroon: Regular passport for general travel.
  • Red: Official passport for government officials and employees on official duty.
  • Dark Blue: Diplomatic passport for members of the Cabinet and high-ranking government officials.

Each type incorporates design elements that reflect the nation’s identity and values.

While the passport’s strength in terms of travel access is moderate, its design proudly represents the Philippines’ heritage and national pride.
