PNP-HPG slams viral video of alleged extortion as 2018 footage, urges public to fight misinformation

The Philippine National Police-Highway Patrol Group (PNP-HPG) confirmed that the viral video showing one of its personnel allegedly extorting a motorist was actually a recycled video from 2018. According to PNP-HPG Spokesperson Lt. Dame Malang, the incident occurred years ago, and the officer involved was dismissed in 2019. Efforts are now underway to determine how the old footage resurfaced and misled the public.

The confirmation came after the viral video began spreading quickly on different social media platforms over the weekend. It showed a uniformed HPG officer seemingly asking a car driver for money in Pasay City. Many online users immediately reacted, criticizing the police force. However, Malang stressed that the officer seen in the clip has long been removed from service and warned that sharing outdated videos could cause unnecessary panic and misinformation.

In response, PNP-HPG Chief BGen. Eleazar Matta has already coordinated with the PNP Anti-Cybercrime Group (ACG) to file appropriate complaints against at least four individuals identified to be behind the reposting of the old viral video. They are now tracking the Facebook pages responsible for spreading the misleading content.

Lt. Malang appealed to the public to be more careful in believing what they see and hear on social media. She encouraged everyone to verify first and to report any suspicious or misleading content to the authorities immediately.

It serves as a good reminder of how false information can easily proliferate and cause reputational harm, if one isn’t careful, adds Malang. At the same time, he also stressed that the PNP-HPG remains firm in its commitment to transparency and accountability in government and will pursue those who misbehave within its organization.

The spokesman for the group stated that action was taken several years ago regarding the officer in the viral video, indicating that the agency does not tolerate lawbreaking members.

In the meantime, authorities have warned content creators and social media users that sharing incorrect or outdated information may lead to legal action, as seen in the viral video. “Sending such a misleading message with a deceptive intent can be penalized under the Cybercrime Prevention Act.” Those convicted of sending a misleading message maliciously may be penalized.

The PNP-HPG has also strengthened its internal monitoring systems to prevent similar incidents and maintain public trust.

BGen. Matta stated that while the organization is open to valid criticism, it will also vigorously defend the truth against those who attempt to tarnish its name by revisiting and revising old and resolved issues.

Ultimately, the PNP-HPG urged everyone to adopt responsible social media use and support initiatives that promote factual and verified information, thereby ensuring the safety and welfare of all.
