NBA: Pistons Silence The Court As They Tie Against Knicks in Game 2

Madison Square Garden has “that” electric energy as they witness the highly anticipated clash between the New York Knicks and Detroit Pistons. The good news for the Knicks is that they entered the matchup riding high after a strong fourth-quarter rally. This led them to a Game 1 victory. Meanwhile, the Pistons faced the challenge of the weight of a historic 15-game postseason losing streak.

For Game 2, Detroit has come prepared. The Pistons stunned the home crowd with a focused and resilient performance and walked away with a 100-94 win. This move from the team snapped their NBA-record playoff drought and tied the series at 1-1. The victory was powered by Cade Cunningham’s dominant outing and a clutch three-pointer from midseason addition Dennis Schroder.

This win was a monumental moment for the Pistons franchise. They hadn’t reached the playoffs since 2019 and hadn’t won a playoff game since Game 4 of the 2008 Eastern Conference Finals against the Boston Celtics. Since then, the team endured postseason sweeps in 2009, 2016, and 2019, along with a Game 1 loss to the Knicks this year. The Game 2 result finally put an end to that brutal stretch.

The Pistons opened Game 2 with confidence, jumping to an early lead and setting the tone. Detroit players led 55-49 at halftime, showing far more control than in Game 1. The team also took full command in the third quarter, holding the Knicks to just one field goal in the first seven minutes. That stretch helped the Pistons extend their lead to 68-53, their largest of the night.

Unlike Game 1, where New York rallied late, the Pistons showed resilience under pressure. As expected, the Knicks fought back in the final quarter. The group mounted a 16-4 run that tied the game at 94. Josh Hart’s fast-break dunk capped off the comeback and brought the crowd to its feet.

But with just 55 seconds remaining, Dennis Schroder rose to the occasion. The veteran guard hit a tie-breaking three-pointer, returning the momentum to Detroit. He later added a free throw to seal the game. Schroder finished with 20 points off the bench, proving his value in critical moments.

Cade Cunningham led all Pistons scorers with 33 points and 12 rebounds. He was more efficient compared to Game 1, where he shot 8-of-21. The American basketball player aggressively attacked the paint and consistently drew contact. His eagerness to win puts the Knicks’ defense on their heels.

Tobias Harris and Paul Reed also contributed significantly during Detroit’s pivotal third-quarter run. Reed was starting in place of backup center Isaiah Stewart, who missed the game due to right knee inflammation. Despite the lineup change, the Pistons maintained their intensity on both ends.

Jalen Brunson delivered another explosive performance for the Knicks with a game-high 37 points. However, he received little help from his supporting cast. Karl-Anthony Towns and OG Anunoby, who scored 23 points in Game 1, were held to just 10 points each in this outing. This unexpected drop-off hurts New York’s offensive rhythm.

The game’s box score revealed telling stats. Detroit shot 43.5% from the field, while New York managed 42.7%. The Pistons hit 10 of 29 attempts (34.5%) from beyond the arc, narrowly edging out the Knicks’ 9 of 30 (30%). A major difference came from the free-throw line, where the Pistons made 26 of 34 shots. In contrast, the Knicks only attempted 19 free throws, converting 13.

Detroit also won the rebounding battle 48-34, which helped them control second-chance opportunities. The turnover count remained close, with the Pistons committing 12 and the Knicks 13.

This win held major significance for Detroit beyond just tying the series. The team’s turnaround has been remarkable. After finishing the 2023-24 season with just 14 wins and a record-setting 28-game losing streak, the Pistons posted a 44-38 record this year. Their Game 2 win symbolized how far they’ve come in such a short span.

The Pistons will carry momentum and a renewed sense of belief as the series shifts to Detroit for Game 3 on Thursday night. The Knicks, on the other hand, will need to regroup and make the necessary adjustments, especially on offense. With the series now tied 1-1, the pressure is on both teams to take control in one of the most compelling playoff matchups.
