A lawmaker has expressed support for the newly signed law that restructures the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) into the Department of Economy, Planning and Development (DEPDev), calling it a timely move to enhance economic policy coordination and planning.
DEPDev Law Seen to Strengthen NEDA’s Role
Bukidnon 2nd District Representative Jonathan Keith Flores, one of the bill’s principal authors, emphasized that the transformation reflects the growing role of NEDA in shaping national economic priorities. He expressed optimism that the measure will lead to more responsive and strategic planning in government spending and poverty alleviation programs.
“One of the magandang aspects kasi ng DEPDev bill is that there is gonna be ‘yung tinatawag nating planning call… Para mas responsive yung paggamit natin ng pera. There’s a shift ngayon sa economy because of the tariffs that are imposed by the US. So dapat mas mabigyan ng importansya itong pag-plano on how to spend our limited resources to counter the possible effects of kung anumang tariffs na ipinatong sa mga produkto natin,” Flores explained.
(One of the good aspects of the DEPDev bill is the inclusion of what we call a planning call. This aims to make our use of funds more responsive. Currently, there’s a shift in the economy due to the tariffs imposed by the US. Therefore, greater importance should be placed on planning how to allocate our limited resources to counter the potential effects of these tariffs on our products.)
He also highlighted the need for continuity and long-term strategies that transcend changes in political leadership. “Dapat evidence-based ‘yung paggastos natin ng pera. If it is planned na may long-term plans tayo through the Department of Development, hindi siya affected by the changes in administration. Para ‘yung plans natin in addressing poverty will be long-term and it should not be affected by the changes in the political cycles,” he added.

In a statement, NEDA noted that the DEPDev law strengthens the agency’s mandate and institutional independence. It also enhances NEDA’s capacity as the government’s lead agency in policy-making, planning, coordination, and monitoring of the national economy under the Executive branch.
