NASA Astronaut Don Pettit Triumphantly Returns to Earth on 70th Birthday After Historic Space Mission
NASA astronaut Don Pettit has returned to Earth after a remarkable seven-month space mission aboard the International Space Station (ISS). The Soyuz MS-26 spacecraft, carrying Pettit and Russian cosmonauts Alexey Ovchinin and Ivan Vagner, safely touched down in Kazakhstan on April 20, 2025, at 6:20 a.m. local time. Coincidentally, the landing happened on Pettit’s’ 70th birthday, adding a special touch to an already incredible milestone in his career.
A Historic Return

The three-astronaut mission began on September 11, 2024, when they launched to the ISS aboard Soyuz MS-26. They orbited the Earth 3,520 times and covered a total distance of 93.3 million miles (150.15 million kilometers) over 220 days. During this period, Pettit participated in scientific research, including investigating in-orbit metal 3D printing capability, water sanitation technology, and microgravity effects on plant growth and fire behavior.
As the crew departed the ISS, they transferred command to Japanese astronaut Takuya Onishi in an orderly handover and continued operations on board the space station. Upon his return, Pettit underwent standard medical checks and was transported to NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston for further testing and recuperation. Authorities escorted Ovchinin and Vagner to Russia’s Star City training facility outside Moscow.
Don Pettit’s Legacy in Space

Born in Silverton, Oregon, Pettit was selected as a NASA astronaut in 1996. He has since completed three long-duration missions aboard the ISS, logging over 590 days in space, the most by any American male astronaut. Notably, Pettit invented the Zero-G Cup, the first object patented in space, designed to assist astronauts in drinking liquids without gravity.
He’s also famous for his incredible astrophotography, snapping breathtaking shots of Earth and cosmic wonders from the ISS. To capture those long-exposure images, he created a clever DIY star tracker that keeps up with the station’s movement. It’s a perfect blend of creativity and science.
